Schools, pupils and their characteristics: January 2015

Data based on information collected in the January 2015 school census, including information on the number of schools and pupils.
It covers all types of school in England including:
• local-authority-maintained schools
• academies
• free schools
• studio schools
• university technical colleges
• independent schools
The release shows an increase of 2.1% in the number of pupils in state-funded primary schools in the last year. State-funded secondary schools saw an increase of 0.1%.

Participation in education, training and employment: age 16 to 18

Updates to national participation figures from SFR18/2014, released in June 2014, and provisional estimates for end 2014.
This statistical first release (SFR) brings together information from the different post-16 learning options, which include:
• school
• further education college
• work-based learning
• higher education

The SFR provides provisional information on the percentages of 16- to 18-year-olds in England in education and training and those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) for end 2014. Important analyses are by:
• age
• gender
• mode of study
• type of learning
• institution type (further education college, school, etc)
• labour market status
• highest qualification being studied

There are additional tables showing a time series back to 1985.

Participation in full-time education saw an increase of 1.6 percentage points between 2013 and 2014. This increase was mostly attributed to 17 year olds.


Provision for children under 5 years of age: January 2015

Data on the provision of education for children under 5 years of age, including:
• the number of children benefiting from funded early years education
• providers of funded early years education

157,040 2-year olds, 646,670 3-year olds and 675,220 4-year olds took up a place in funded early education. 85% of these received their education from a provider that was rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.
