National curriculum assessments at key stage 2, 2014 (revised)

  • This statistical first release (SFR) provides revised results for pupils in schools at national, regional and local authority level. Information is given by gender, ethnicity, first language, free school meal eligibility, disadvantage, special educational needs (SEN) and Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI).
  • Results are given from the key stage 2 tests in: reading; mathematics; and grammar, punctuation and spelling. Key stage 2 teacher assessments are also provided for: English; mathematics; science; reading; and writing.
  • The data show increased attainment in all subject areas, with greatest increases in reading and grammar, punctuation and spelling. In reading, writing and mathematics combined, 79% of pupils achieved a level 4 or above, compared to 75% in 2013.

Measuring disadvantaged pupils' attainment gaps over time

  • The dataset includes national level results at key stage 2 and key stage 4 for: 2012; 2013; and (2014 at key stage 2).

  • The tables show: results from the key stage 2 tests in reading, mathematics, grammar, punctuation and spelling; key stage 2 teacher assessments in English, reading, writing, mathematics and science; and key stage 1 to key stage 2 pupil progress measures in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Additional school-level data includes: information on the expenditure of each local authority maintained school open for the full 2013 to 2014 financial year; the number of teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff; the pupil to teacher ratio; the mean gross salary of full-time teachers; pupil characteristics; pupil absences and Ofsted ratings.

Outcomes for children looked after by local authorities

  • This statistical first release provides information at national and local authority (LA) level on the outcomes for children who have been looked after continuously for at least 12 months at 31 March 2014. This is the fifth year that this annual release has been published.
  • Outcome measures reported on include: educational attainment; special educational needs (SEN); exclusions from school; health including emotional and behavioural health; and offending and substance misuse.
  • The data show that despite attainment gaps between looked after and non-looked after children remaining broadly similar, attainment is improving for looked after children. For example, 71% of looked after children achieved level 2 or above in reading, compared with 69% in 2013.

  • In this cycle, over half a million people were placed in higher education. This is an increase of 3.4% from last year. Acceptances increased both within the UK and outside.

Malpractice in GCSE and A Level: Summer 2014 exam Series

  • This report gives information on the number of incidents of malpractice in the GCSE and A Levels, summer 2014 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • An increase can be seen in the number of penalties for possession of a mobile phone or other electronic device, from 810 in the previous year, to 850. However, overall penalties have decreased by 1.5% from last year.

Young people NEET: comparative data scorecard

  • The Department for Education publishes an estimate each year of the proportion of young people not in education, employment or training. This dataset gives information about young people’s participation and attainment in education, employment or training, alongside a range of other related information. The dataset is broken down into a separate scorecard for each local authority in England.

Children in care and adoption performance tables 2014

  • These tables show local authorities how their adoption and looked-after children’s services compare with others in England.
  • They contain detailed performance tables for every local authority in England on 16 key indicators relating to children in care and adoption. These include: how quickly they place children for adoption; the number of placement moves children have in a year; the level of educational attainment of children in care; and the number of former care leavers in education, employment or training at the ages of 19, 20 and 21.

  • Details are given of: name of the local authority; location of the new school; phase of education; capacity of the school; closing date of specification; and link to the specification.

  • This statistical first release provides information about looked-after children in England for the year ending 31 March 2014.
  • A number of additional national and local authority tables for this SFR were published on 10 December 2014.
